Introduction to Winter Animal Tracks

In January we are hosting a winter animal tracks event that will be both online and self-guided in the field - and a great event for the whole family. We will provide education about finding and identifying animal tracks in the snow and give you the opportunity to learn about the animals that leave those tracks.

For one week, starting Saturday, January 30th everyone is encouraged to visit our Land Trust preserves (see our Preserves page for a full list of our Preserves with maps), walk the trails, look for tracks, and then share photos and information about the tracks. We will help to identify the tracks.

This event is for anyone interested in learning and sharing about animals and tracking, beginners through experts. We will provide resources to get you started with finding and identifying tracks from the many animals that stay active through the winter. We will also share on our Facebook page any photos and observations — and questions will be answered by Maine Master Naturalist Marion Sprague. We will compile a list of all of the different animals whose tracks are seen during the week and share it at the end of the event.

To participate:

1) You will receive in the mail a laminated pocket card of Greater Portland Animals Tracks to bring with you on your adventures. Plus a variety of other resources to learn to identify animals tracks.

2) Visit any of our trails and photograph or draw the tracks you see.

3) Send us your photos, observations, or questions via email (you can reply to the email address you get after registering).

4) Check back during/after the week to see what everyone else found and how many total animals’ tracks were identified.
