TRAIL ACTIVITIES

A number of PRLT trails host family-friendly activities, including a story walk, a natural playscape, fairy/gnome villages, and scavenger hunts. These free resources are provided for the community to engage with the lands we conserve.

Story Walk

  • The story walk is located at Rivermeadow Nature Preserve in Westbrook. This easy trail along the Presumpscot River is a mix of six-foot-wide boardwalk and paths covered in woodchips, making the trail easy to follow and navigate.

  • The story walk is a fun way to engage families in literacy while being active. Pages from a children’s book are mounted and displayed on posts along the trail for readers to enjoy as they walk.

  • The story walk is updated annually and is made possible with help of volunteers, Walker Memorial Library, and the United Way of Greater Portland.

Natural Playscape

  • A natural playscape is located on the loop trail at Steep Falls Village Preserve in Standish. This playscape is made from logs from the property. The "stepping stones" and "balance beams" allow for imaginative play and exploration.

  • The playscape was installed by Program Manager Toby Jacobs and volunteer Preserve Steward, Andrew Walton, with additional support from our trail work volunteers.

Fairy/Gnome Village

  • The Fairy/Gnome Village is located at Pride Preserve in Westbrook. There are fairy and gnome homes scattered throughout the trail system.

  • Add your own home to the fairy folk land, just be sure to use only natural items.
