Backyard Bird Count with PRLT

Join Us for the Great Backyard Bird Count! Participate in The Global Community Science Project at your local Land Turst Preserve.

The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a global birding event held annually by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon. This fun and meaningful community science project invites bird enthusiasts of all levels to observe, identify, and count birds—helping scientists better understand and protect bird populations worldwide. Participate in the GBBC and look for birds at a Presumpscot Regional Land Trust preserve.

This activity is perfect for bird enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels. Whether you're a seasoned birder or just curious about the feathered friends in your backyard, this walk will help you connect with nature while contributing to important conservation efforts. Take part in this fun and meaningful global community science project.

Presumpscot Regional Land Trust (PRLT) is offering two ways to join in the GBBC:


Guided Bird Walk

Guided Bird Walk at East Windham Conservation Area- Sunday, February 16, 9-11 AM

  • Location: East Windham Conservation Area

  • Led by: Maine Naturalist Christine Murray

  • Enjoy a quiet walk through the preserve while spotting and identifying birds.

  • We’ll submit our bird list to eBird as part of the GBBC.


Self-Guided Birding

Bird at any PRLT preserve February 14–17

Discover the wonders of birding at your own pace with our self-guided Backyard Bird Count Walk! In just 15 minutes, you can make a difference. Simply watch birds at a PRLT preserve, identify them, count them and submit your sightings.

  • Visit any of PRLT’s 22 public preserves at your convenience. Suggested PRLT preserves: East Windham Conservation Area, Mill Brook Preserve, Black Brook Preserve or Steep Falls Preserve.

    • Download a trail map from PRLT preserves webpage

  • Walk the trails, count and identify birds while you walk by sight or sound.

    • Birding Resources: Utilize the Cornell Bird App ebird or Merlin Bird ID to document your findings.

    • What to Bring: Binoculars (if you have them), a smartphone or notebook for recording your observations in the app, and ID resources, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear

  • Submit your findings to PRLT's google form, and to ebird here.  

PRLT will compile and post all birding lists from the weekend on our website!

By participating, you contribute valuable data that supports global bird conservation. Together, we can help protect the vibrant bird species that call our region home.
